Launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India.
The objective of survey is to encourage largescale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities better places to live in. In addition, survey also seeks to promote a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities, to improve the quality of their services to people, and create cleaner cities and towns.
The first survey was undertaken in 2016 and covered 73 cities; by 2023 the survey had grown to cover 4416 cities and was said to be the largest cleanliness survey in the world. Data was collected using indicators on service level progress, direct observation, and citizen feedback. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is now in the process of conducting the next edition of the survey with Quality Council of India (QCI) as its implementation partner.
