Jal Jeevan Awards 2022

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India. The programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, rainwater harvesting.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is based on a community approach to water and will include extensive information, education and communication as key components of the mission. JJM looks to create a jan andolan for water, thereby making it everyone’s priority.

In 2023, awards were given to districts and states by assessing functionality and service delivery under JJM (Tables 1 and 2). The districts certified under “Har Ghar Jal” were also announced (Table 3).

Swachh Survekshan Grameen Awards 2022

The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) had commissioned “Swachh Survekshan Grameen-2019” (SSG 2019) through an independent survey agency to develop ranking of all districts of India based on quantitative and qualitative sanitation (Swachhata) parameters. This ranking was done based on a comprehensive set of parameters including surveys of public places like schools, Anganwadis, PHCs, Haat/ Bazaars, Panchayat, and citizen’s perception of Swachhata and their recommendations for improvement of the programme.

Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2022 aimed to undertake the ranking of States and Districts on the basis of their performance attained on key quantitative and qualitative parameters of SBM-G Phase II. The survey covered 17,559 villages in 709 Districts in 33 States/UTs (excluding the 3 UTs of Chandigarh, Delhi and Lakshadweep) across India. More than 1.75 lakh households were interviewed for their feedback.

The collection of data from direct observation was based on physical observation of the sanitation status in public places by the survey agency. The survey agency used maps and simple handheld device/recording formats to record their observations and findings along with Photographs/videos, wherever necessary. Feedback from people were obtained using community wide open meetings, personal interviews, and Focused Group Discussions.

The top ranked States and Districts which received awards are listed in Table 1.

Swachh Survekshan 2023 Awards

Launched as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India.

The objective of survey is to encourage largescale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities better places to live in. In addition, survey also seeks to promote a spirit of healthy competition among towns and cities, to improve the quality of their services to people, and create cleaner cities and towns.

The first survey was undertaken in 2016 and covered 73 cities; by 2023 the survey had grown to cover 4416 cities and was said to be the largest cleanliness survey in the world. Data was collected using indicators on service level progress, direct observation, and citizen feedback. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is now in the process of conducting the next edition of the survey  with Quality Council of India (QCI) as its implementation partner.

Tables 1 and 2 give the lists of top 10 cities (with a population exceeding one lakh and less than one lakh) according to Swachh Survekshan 2023.
